Web design has been evolving for decades. Since its inception, the field has transformed dramatically—from simple text-only interfaces to the pixelated blocks and bold patterns of the 1990s, and now to the highly customized, sophisticated designs of today.
This year, New Concept Design celebrates 25 years in the web design business. Over this time, we’ve supported countless businesses, organizations and individuals with their websites, offering a full suite of web development and digital marketing services, including web hosting, security, and even printing. Reflecting on our journey, it’s remarkable to see how far we’ve come since launching as a premium custom web design agency.
Throughout these years, we’ve remained dedicated to helping businesses of all sizes, organizations and entrepreneurs establish a strong online presence and drive growth. Our commitment to innovation and customer success continues to shape our approach, and we’re excited to keep setting new standards in web design.
History of Web Design: A Timeline
- 1991: The first web page is launched on August 6, 1991 by Berners-Lee. Hosted on a NeXT computer at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, it was a simple page containing information about the World Wide Web.
- 1992: Pop parody group Les Horribles Cernettes are the subject of the first photo on the Internet.
- 1994: The first Internet ad is placed by AT&T on HotWired.com. It was a banner ad boasting a clickthrough rate of 44%.
- 1994: Also in 1994, Geocities is launched. This allowed everyday people to create websites of their own with simple layouts featuring bright patterned backgrounds, clip art, and text formatting.
- 1995: Javascript is invented, originally called Mocha and then LiveScript. What Javascript did was convert a static page into something users could interact with. Javascript added interactive elements still used today, such as drop-down menus and embedded forms.
- 1996: Adobe Flash, then known as FutureSplash, was released. It provided web designers a way to integrate animation, video, and audio.
- 1997: The founder of what would eventually become New Concept Design began working in web design in affiliation with the University of Western Ontario, now known as Western University.
- 1998: CSS is invented, separating content in HTML from the visual elements, such as layout, colours, and font. This further increased the flexibility and control of a website’s appearance.
- 1999: New Concept Design launches!
- 2003: WordPress bursts onto the scene, popularizing blogging and Content Management Systems.
- 2007: This was the year the first iPhone launched and the first time it was thought a priority to make websites mobile-accessible. This would eventually lead to mobile-first web design and a dramatic shift from desktop-first design approaches.
- 2010: Responsive web design is invented, allowing web design companies to create websites that automatically adjust and scale to the size of the browser window.
